Dental Implant Surgery – Your Questions Answered

If missing teeth are ruining your smile, dental implant surgery may be your best solution. The procedure replaces tooth roots with titanium screws that attach to your jawbone. After a healing period, natural-looking artificial teeth are attached to the anchoring material. Implants are a refreshing alternative to ill-fitting dentures or complicated bridgework. Dental implant surgery is generally carried out in stages. It may require multiple surgeries and take many months, but the implants will never slip, make noises, or cause bone loss or tooth decay in adjacent teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Implants?

A good candidate for implants has healthy jawbone available in the area where each implant is needed. Bone grafts may be an option for those who don’t. Healthy gums and good general health are also preferable.

I Want the Best Dental Implants, But Are There Any Risks?

The surgery poses minor risks of infection, damage to teeth or blood vessels, nerve damage, and sinus problems, but most complications are easily treated.

How Do I Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery?

Before your surgery, your dentist will take x-rays and make models of your teeth or mouth. After a thorough evaluation, a treatment plan is made, and you’ll have the opportunity to discuss pain control and anesthesia options with your dentist.

Stages of the Dental Implant Restoration Process

  • Damaged teeth are removed, if applicable.
  • Your jawbone is prepared.
  • Your dentist places the implant metal post into your jaw.
  • The jaw is allowed to heal and fuse to the implant for several months.
  • An extension called an abutment is attached to the implant.
  • Your new artificial tooth is completed with a crown.

What If I Need Many Teeth Replaced?

Multiple individual implants are one option, but full or partial implant dentures may be a more practical choice. Both fixed and removable implant dentures can be anchored to your jawbone by an implant.

What Can I Expect After Surgery?

Facial swelling, bruising, pain, and bleeding may occur after surgery. Pain medicines or antibiotics may be required. You’ll probably have to eat a soft diet for a week or two while you heal. For the best long-term results, get regular dental check-ups, and practice excellent oral hygiene.
