Teeth Cleaning and Lasting Health – Making the Connection
In addition to providing you with an unbeatable clean feeling, research revealed at a recent meeting of the American Heart Association suggests that undergoing professional teeth cleaning also offers an impressive array of health benefits. Given these recent insights into the connection between clean teeth and overall well-being, now may be the perfect time to improve both your smile and your health with a visit to your dental hygienist.
A recent research study suggests that patients who have professional teeth cleaning procedures, in which the gums and teeth are thoroughly cleaned by a dental hygienist, may enjoy upwards of a 24% drop in their risk of heart attack as compared to those who have not undergone such a procedure. Lead researcher Zu-Yin Chen, M.D., reported that patients who had teeth cleaning performed by a dental hygienist saw a 13% decrease in stroke risk.
The study, conducted at the Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, involved the records of roughly 100,000 patients, half of whom had received at least one scaling by a dental hygienist, and half of whom had never had even one. The participating patients were monitored for seven years, during which any incidence of heart attack or stroke was noted.
Ralph Sacco, M.D., past president of the American Heart Association, believes this study provides further support for the proposition that regular teeth cleaning in addition to proper home dental care habits such as daily brushing and flossing really can lead to improved heart health and lower risk of stroke.
There has long been an understanding of the connection between the plaque and bacteria produced by gum disease and a hardening of key arteries that can cause strokes. Professional dental cleaning helps eliminate these elements that pose an ongoing risk of inflammation and infection that can cause problems in areas of the body well beyond the mouth.
While the Taiwanese study did not take into account additional factors such as smoking, weight, or demographic makeup, Dr. Sacco suggests that it may simply be that those who follow proper dental care routines and schedule regular visits with their dentist and dental hygienist, also eat a healthier diet and make an effort to stay physically fit.
